TCG now offers CloudBerry as a cloud backup alternative when we build servers for our clients. It is a low-cost, month-to-month managed cloud backup as a service. TCG can even provide CloudBerry as a standalone service for the systems we do not proactively manage with a support contract.
With this new offering that supports several Operating systems such as Windows, Mac, Linux, TCG installs backup software on the server, setup and manage the cloud storage account, tunes the backup strategies, closely monitors the progress of any backups, troubleshoots any errors and perform any restores.
TCG is excited about this new offering as it aligns with the UIT multi-year cloud initiative.
Some of the interesting features of CloudBerry:

- Image Based Backup Block-level volume snapshots are taken and sent directly to the cloud. It also does block level backup which backups only modified files to the existing data pool to help reduce the amount of uploaded data and speeds up the backup.
- Backup to anywhere With Cloudberry you can backup data to a local storage, external or network drive or even another cloud storage location or can have multiple cloud storage destinations.
- Multiple Cloud Storage Support There are several Cloud Storage options available such as Amazon S3, Amazon Glacier, Windows Azure, Rackspace, OpenStack, Google Storage(Nearline,Coldline), and others and it can also restore to a cloud VM.
- Network Locations Backup It has the ability to backup network location such as network shares, NAS devices, mapped drives, etc.
- Retention Policies helps you manage and configure your data to free up space automatically or maintain versions of the files.
- Secure Data Transfer It can help detect any changes in files and can prevents existing backups from being overwritten until an administrator confirms if there is an issue. All the data sent to the cloud is encrypted using the SSL protocols to protect while it is in transit and can we can use up to 256-bit AES Encryption.
- Scheduling and Real-Time Backup Cloudberry does Real-Time Backup meaning it copies the data immediately as it changes (existing files are modified or new files being added).
Our recent experience with CloudBerry
While we were on boarding new clients for providing backup as a service, we found out that certain Windows Operating systems such as Windows 2012 R2 would not backup data with TLS 1.0 disabled. TLS 1.0 being an older security protocol used on SSL secure web pages is vulnerable to the man-in-the-middle attack, risking the integrity and authentication of data sent between a website and a browser. Disabling TLS 1.0 on the server is sufficient to mitigate the issue.
After we tested and verified on a few systems that disabling TLS1.0 on Windows 2012 R2 systems failed to backup, we reported it to CloudBerry support. Apparently, Stanford(TCG) were the first ones to report such an issue. CloudBerry support worked with their R&D team to fix this issue in their upcoming release. Now the latest CloudBerry agent version v.5.8.4.54 works with no issues.
